Snoring & sleep apnoea

To safeguard your health and mental well-being, almost nothing is as important as a good night’s sleep. If snoring has become a serious problem for you or your partner, then you might benefit from a high quality, custom-made anti-snoring appliance that is comfortable and easy to wear, whilst allowing talking and the ability to drink water during the night.

These appliances, sometimes called MRDs (Mandibular Repositioning Devices) or MADs (Mandibular Advancement Devices), work by supporting the lower jaw in a slightly forward position so that the back of the tongue can no longer fall back and vibrate against the soft palate, which is what happens when snoring.

Sleep apnoea is more common than many people realise. It means the person has temporarily stopped breathing during sleep. Some people wake up hearing themselves choking/gasping as they finally take a breath again, often called obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Other related conditions include obstructive sleep apnoea and hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS).

Screening for the possibility of OSA is essential prior to providing a snoring appliance, as many people are unaware they are suffering from this potentially serious condition. At Ringley Park Dental Practice we can offer overnight monitoring. We are then able to use software data to download information to see if sleep apnoea may be implicated.
