It’s Time for a Cuppa - helping families facing dementia

Maintaining good oral health is an essential part of everyone’s wellbeing, not just because of its impact on our ability to eat, speak and smile, but also how it affects our self-esteem. Over recent years there’s been increasing research into the relationship between oral health and a number of broader health conditions including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, mouth cancer and dementia.

The increase in cases of dementia is a significant global public health concern. The Alzheimer’s Society (2014) reports there are over 850,000 people currently living with dementia in the UK and it’s estimated this figure will hit one million in 2021.

As we get older, so does our risk of developing dementia and many of us will have a family member or know of someone who has suffered with this distressing condition. According to the charity Dementia UK, those living with dementia have a high rate of tooth decay and gum disease. This is likely to be because they struggle to perform normal daily activities, including brushing their teeth, or are unable to express they have toothache or sore gums, with the consequence that many problems go untreated.

Living with dementia can be challenging for everyone involved, not least the struggle between those with dementia and their oral health, and it can be heart-breaking. That’s why Dementia UK offers support that will ease and soften the load - and all they need is you!

Time for a Cuppa is the perfect occasion to get together with friends, family or work colleagues over a cuppa and some cake to raise money to help dementia specialist nurses support more families facing dementia. Time for a Cuppa is a specific opportunity to get people to think more about dementia and its impact. All you need to do to get involved is:
1. Choose a date and location, then invite your guests
2. Bake - or buy - some cakes!
3. Enjoy the occasion with friends, family, colleagues or classmates whilst raising funds for families facing dementia
4. Count up the cash and send it to Dementia UK

Every cake you bake, every cuppa you make and every pound you raise can make a real difference to families facing dementia - so why not give it a go?

At Ringley Park Dental Practice in Reigate we know that when it comes to oral health our dentists and hygienists will do everything they can to support those living with dementia and their carers - year in, year out.
