Paediatric Dentistry: Specialist Children’s Dentist in Surrey

Set children up for a lifetime of excellent dental health with the help of a specialist children’s dentist at Ringley Park in Reigate.

We are specially trained in paediatric dentistry, catering to nervous patients and those with special needs to ensure they feel happy and comfortable in our care. It can be especially hard to access an NHS children’s dentist and Ringley Park is one of the few practices in our area able to provide this specialist service outside a hospital setting.

Our private paediatric dentist provides preventative care tailored to the specific needs and concerns of each child. From fissure sealants to silver diamine fluoride, we provide our young patients with the latest evidence-based treatments. We encourage early and regular care with an emphasis on education and prevention, ensuring the very best start for your child’s oral health.

Nervous children and special care dentistry

It is common for children to feel nervous about visiting the dentist, and general dentist practices can be under-resourced when it comes to helping children overcome their anxiety. At Ringley Park, we offer a gentle caring environment for children and patients with special needs.

Our team has additional training and is highly experienced in dealing with anxious patients of all ages, implementing a range of proven methods to help children feel relaxed in our care.  We provide inhalation sedation (happy air) which is a safe way to reduce anxiety in young and nervous children.

We are more than happy to talk to parents or carers before the appointment, helping you know what to expect. Once you’re here, we have toys for children to play with and a dedicated children’s dental surgery covered in fun stickers. We also offer longer appointments that allow plenty of time for children to get comfortable in the chair.

Parents may also want to consider booking their own check-up for the same time. Once children see that mum or dad is happy to see the dentist, their fears will subside and visiting the dentist becomes a far more positive experience.

Speak to us today and give your child the dedicated care they need.

FAQs

What age should a child go to the dentist?

It’s important to start early with your child’s dental care. They should be taken to the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears, and definitely before their first birthday. This gets them used to the atmosphere of visiting the practice and ensures families are provided with the best advice for looking after their baby’s teeth . Visiting a specialist dentist for children will also help them to establish a positive connection with routine dental check-ups.

When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?

Once a baby’s milk teeth begin to appear, it’s important to get them familiar with using a toothbrush. The earlier you start, the more likely they are to continue a good oral health routine in the future.

What toothpaste should my child use?

Fluoride toothpaste should be used to prevent tooth decay. The amount of fluoride in a toothpaste will be clearly stated on the side of the packaging. It is recommended that children under 3 use a toothpaste containing 1000ppm fluoride. Children over 3 should use a toothpaste containing 1350-1550ppm fluoride.

Why is fluoride important?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been proven to effectively strengthen teeth and fight cavities. For this reason, it is an added ingredient in most toothpastes and is added to drinking water supplies in certain areas of the UK. Children can also receive a fluoride varnish treatment at the dentist, providing further protection against tooth decay.

How does children’s oral health impact on their general health?

Poor oral health in children can cause pain and lead to infections, impacting their ability to eat, sleep, speak, play and learn. The average UK child will miss 3 school days a year due to dental problems, and tooth decay is the leading cause of hospital admissions in children aged 5 to 9.
