It’s common knowledge that smoking is bad for you. But it’s equally well known that it’s extremely hard to give up.
There are zero health benefits to smoking and scores of health risks associated with it, and there are many side effects that smoking can cause which not only affect your overall health but can damage your teeth.
Smoking is well known to cause bad breath, stained teeth, gum disease, tooth loss and – most serious of all – mouth cancer. Mouth cancer is the 6th most common cancer in the world and many cases of mouth cancer come as a direct result of smoking and using products that contain nicotine, tar and tobacco.
That’s why we strongly support the NHS Stoptober campaign which offers help and support to help smokers quit.
What happens when you quit?
It’s amazing how quickly your body can recover even after years of regular smoking. According to the NHS Better Health Guide, the effects of stopping smoking begin almost instantly and have really positive long-term consequences.
• After 20 mins your pulse should already be returning to normal.
• After 48 hours, all carbon monoxide is flushed out, your lungs are clearing out mucus and your senses of taste and smell are improving.
• After only 72 hours, you might already be breathing easier.
• After 3 to 9 months, any coughs, wheezing or breathing problems will be improving as your lung function increases by up to 10%.
• After 1 year, your risk of a heart attack will be halved compared with a smoker.
• After 10 years, your risk of death from lung cancer will have halved compared with a smoker.
Creating good habits
Breaking a bad habit is hard and takes time, but the good news is that if you’re able to make it through Stoptober smoke free, you are 5 times more likely to quit smoking for good!
Similarly, forming good habits also takes a while and this is the case with creating and adhering to a good oral health routine.
You can ensure that you look after your teeth by brushing them twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes each time and flossing at least once a day.
Make sure that you also come to see us at Ringley Park for regular check-ups with your dentist and hygienist, as these will not only help make sure your teeth are in the best condition possible but will also help you to keep an eye on your overall oral health.
With almost 66% of mouth cancer being a result of smoking it’s always good to be aware of any signs or symptoms of mouth cancer which might need checking. If you are worried about anything, please book an appointment to get it checked out.
