Fissure sealants are a great way to help protect children’s teeth from decay. The biting surfaces of teeth often contain deep grooves, which can trap food debris – an especially dangerous situation for children who don’t always brush in the most efficient manner. Luckily, these surfaces can be protected with the application of a fissure sealant; a plastic, colourless protective liquid that hardens onto the tooth’s biting surface. This makes it smoother, easier to clean and reduces the incidence of decay.
The fissure sealing procedure is quick and painless:
- The tooth is prepared for the sealant by being cleaned, polished and dried.
- The sealant material is painted onto the tooth.
- The sealant is hardened by the application of a special light for a few seconds.
